Eiffel, an International Excellence Program

The Eiffel Scholarship program was developed by the Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs, and allows French higher education institutions to attract the best international students onto Master's and PhD degree programs. This year, 3 students have been selected as winners of the Eiffel Scholarship Excellence Program for their academic excellence.

Valentina Castro Puerta, a graduate of EAFIT University in Colombia, is one of this year’s scholarship winners. She will be joining IMT Mines Albi in September 2022.

¿Puedes presentarte?

Soy Valentina Castro y estudio ingeniería civil en la Universidad Eafit, en Medellín, Colombia. Siempre a lo largo de mi carrera me han interesado las energías y la construcción sostenible, he estado involucrada en proyectos y formaciones sobre estos temas. Además, me encanta el idioma francés, en 2019 tuve la oportunidad de hacer durante un mes una escuela de verano en Francia, estudiando el idioma todos los días, lo que me permitió conocer aún más la cultura y la vida francesa. Por todo esto, desde que supe que existía la posibilidad de terminar mis estudios en Francia gracias a un convenio entre Eafit y el IMT, no dudé en que esto es lo que quería para mi futuro académico y profesional, además que al mismo tiempo me enteré sobre la beca Eiffel, y sabía que era un reto que quería asumir.

¿Qué representa para usted recibir la Beca de Excelencia Eiffel?

Para mí representa uno de los logros más importantes de mi vida, es la recompensa del esfuerzo que he hecho durante varios años y también es el resultado de la formación que siempre me han dado en mi familia. Es la puerta a un montón de oportunidades para mi futuro, y por último, es la tranquilidad de que durante mi estancia en Francia tendré todas las herramientas necesarias para sacarle el mayor provecho a los estudios y a toda la experiencia.

¿Cómo fue el proceso de candidatura?

Lo primero que hice desde el 2020, fue preguntar al IMT respecto a esta formación, desde ese momento he estado en contacto con Alexis Carrière quien me ha ayudado en todo este proceso y resuelto mis dudas. Para comenzar el proceso, la oficina de internacionalización de mi universidad en Colombia presentó mi candidatura al IMT, donde tuve una entrevista, y ellos al analizar mi perfil decidieron admitirme a la escuela y presentarme a la beca Eiffel, luego siguió el proceso de postulación ante Campus France para la beca, y finalmente, en marzo de 2022 obtuve la respuesta de que fui aceptada para la beca de excelencia Eiffel.

¿Cómo conoció IMT Mines Albi?

Conocí el IMT gracias a las charlas informativas que daba la oficina de internacionalización en mi universidad. Escogí esta escuela principalmente por la educación que ofrecen y las materias que veré durante mis dos años de estudios, pues me encanta el enfoque de ingeniería generalista y que este abre aún más las oportunidades de trabajo y de desempeño una vez finalice los estudios. Lo más emocionante para mí fue que el IMT ofrece la posibilidad de escoger en segundo año un énfasis, el cuál tengo claro que será Construcción a Energía Positiva, pues se alinea perfectamente con mi proyecto profesional.
Otra parte importante para mí fue que pude notar que el IMT ofrece un gran acompañamiento y acogida a los estudiantes internacionales, tiene un campus muy completo y además es una escuela muy organizada y socia de varias empresas, lo cual facilitará mi inserción en el mundo profesional.

¿Qué espera de estos dos años de estudio en Francia?

Espero tener una experiencia increíble, llena de vivencias y aprendizajes, conocer personas de otras nacionalidades, con culturas y formas de pensar diferente. Quiero que sea una oportunidad para ampliar mis conocimientos y ponerme a prueba también aportando lo que sé. Aparte de todo esto, espero poder perfeccionar el francés e integrarme a la cultura francesa. Estar estos dos años en otro país, sé que aportará en gran medida a mi desarrollo personal.

¿Cuáles son sus planes para el futuro?

Después de terminar de estudiar, me gustaría trabajar en el diseño y la construcción de edificios sostenibles y de bajo consumo energético, ya sea en mi país o en el extranjero. De igual forma estoy muy abierta a explorar otros campos de la ingeniería, pues sé que mis dos años en el IMT me darán la capacidad de desempeñarme en otras áreas además de la ingeniería civil. Considero que en Francia tendría un gran potencial de crecimiento profesional, además que es un país que está a la vanguardia de estos temas, por lo que trabajar en Francia sería una muy buena opción.

Could you introduce yourself?

My name is Valentina Castro and I am studying Civil Engineering at EAFIT University in Medellin, Colombia. I have always been interested in energy and sustainable construction, and have participated in projects and training on these topics. Also, I love French; in 2019 I had the opportunity to attend a summer school for one month in France, where I studied the language every day, which allowed me to learn even more about French life and culture. In light of all this, when I discovered that there was the possibility to finish my studies in France thanks to an agreement between EAFIT and IMT Mines Albi, I had no doubt that this was what I wanted for my academic and professional future. I found out about the Eiffel scholarship at the same time, and I knew that it was a challenge I wanted to take on.

What does winning the Eiffel Excellence Scholarship mean to you?

For me, it represents one of the most important accomplishments of my life – it’s the reward of the efforts I have made over several years and also the result of the education that my family have given me. It opens the door to many opportunities in my future, and finally, it is the reassurance of knowing that, during my time in France, I will have all the necessary tools to make the most of my studies and of the whole experience.

What was the application process like?

The first thing I did, which was in 2020, was to ask IMT for more information about this course. Since then, I have been in contact with Alexis Carrière, who helped me throughout the process and cleared my doubts. Firstly, the International Office of my university in Colombia submitted my application to IMT, where I had an interview after they had assessed my profile. They decided to admit me to the school and to nominate me for the Eiffel scholarship, so I then continued the application process for the scholarship with Campus France. Finally, in March 2022, I received the news that I had been accepted for the Eiffel Excellence Scholarship.

How did you hear about IMT Mines Albi?

I discovered IMT Mines Albi thanks to the information events held by the International Office at my university. I chose the school mainly because of the teaching it offers and the classes that I will be taking over my two years of study. I really like the generalist approach to engineering, and the fact that it will open up even more performance and employment opportunities for me after my studies. The most important thing for me was that IMT Mines Albi offers the possibility of choosing a major in the second year, which, for me, I’m certain will be Energy-Plus Building.

What do you expect from your two years in France?

I hope to have an incredible experience, full of learning, and to meet people of other nationalities, with different cultures and ways of thinking. I want it to be an opportunity to broaden my knowledge and test myself by contributing what I know. Apart from that, I hope to be able to improve my French and to integrate into French culture. I know that being in another country for two years will contribute greatly to my personal development.

What are your plans for the future?

At the end of my studies, I would like to work in the design and construction of sustainable and energy-efficient buildings, in my country or abroad. I am also very open to exploring other fields of engineering, as I know that my two years at IMT Mines Albi will give me the
ability to work in fields other than that of civil engineering. I think that in France, there would be great potential for my professional development, as it is a country at the forefront of these issues, so working in France would be a very good option.
